MLA Format

All work should be submitted according to MLA guidelines:

When typing your work:

  • Use a standard, easily readable font and type size (Times New Roman 12 point font is preferred)
  • Use only one side of the paper
  • Indent new paragraphs five spaces (or one-half inch from the left margin); MLA recommends that you use the Tab key as opposed to pushing the Space Bar five times
  • Double-space
  • Use 1″ margins for top, bottom, and sides of your paper
  • Page numbers go in the upper right corner with your last name before each page number
  • Traditionally, two spaces are left after periods or other punctuation marks.  This changed to one space in 2009.  Use your preference.  I chose two personally, but either is acceptable.
  • Staple your work

When handwriting your work:

  • Write legibly and in a standard font size
  • Use a black ink pen
  • Use only one side of the paper
  • Double-space by skipping every other line
  • Use 1″ margins for top, bottom, and sides of your paper (follow the red margin lines on each side of the page and leave 1″ at the bottom – do not write to the end of the page).
  • Paper edges should be clean, not torn.  Cut off frayed edges from a spiral notebook with scissors
  • Use a stapler
