Laura Borger was one of KFVS 12’s Heartland’s Best Teachers in 2006.  The TV camera crew  surprised her with a laptop computer as part of the honor.  She is pictured in her classroom at Carbondale Community High School.

Laura Borger, a native of southern Illinois, has taught at area high schools and colleges since 1998.  She earned her BA in English and BS in Education in 1998.  She earned her MS in Speech Communication with a focus on at-risk education in 2003.  After teaching English at Carbondale Community and Marion High Schools, she reentered graduate school and  earned her MA in English in 2012.  She is currently teaching freshman, sophomore, junior, and senior level English courses at Sparta High School. She began teaching the first dual-credit public speaking course at Sparta High in collaboration with Southwestern Illinois College in the fall of 2013.
